A parent's worst nightmare

Florida mother Olivia Piccolo, 29, experienced the unthinkable this Wednesday. After arriving at her ex-partner’s home in Cocoa to pick up her children, Aira, 5, and Remy, 7, she found all three of them dead from gunshot wounds.

Cocoa Police Chief Evander Collier IV confirmed at a press conference that Piccolo had arrived at the residence for her scheduled custody exchange. Upon finding the door partially ajar, she entered the home and made the horrifying discovery. Authorities believe the father, 37-year-old Joseph Dingwall, was responsible for the deaths of both children before taking his own life.

Warning signs ignored?

This tragedy is heavy, and the details are heartbreaking. Reports indicate that police had been called to Dingwall’s address 11 times in the past for various "medical and suspicious activities."

Additionally, a neighbor, Marcos Garcia, reported hearing two clear gunshots around 12:20 a.m.—roughly 12 hours before Piccolo found the bodies. Garcia’s doorbell camera also captured footage of Dingwall pacing outside the home with a flashlight shortly after the shots were fired, but no one alerted the authorities at the time.

How the community is stepping up

A GoFundMe page established by a family friend has already raised over $15,000 to assist Piccolo with funeral costs. The site remembered Remy as a kind gamer and fierce protector, while Aria was described as a bright, courageous girl who loved animals. Cocoa Mayor Michael C. Blake has urged the community to support the grieving mother, stating, "Tough times don’t always last, tough people do."

Why it matters

This situation is a devastating reminder of the volatility that can exist in custody disputes. It highlights the importance of recognizing red flags early and the catastrophic impact when warning signs—like repeated police visits or audible gunshots—don't result in immediate intervention. If you or someone you know is in a dangerous situation, please reach out to local authorities or support services.
