The hype train hit a wall
The No. 8 Florida Gators were looking like total main character energy coming into Week 5. With a lethal offense averaging 53.5 points per game, everyone was ready to crown head coach Jon Sumrall as the savior of the program. But then Saturday happened. A 45-17 beatdown by No. 25 Missouri? Real talk, the vibes were off from the jump.
Offense stuck in the mud
Jaden Baugh, who had been absolutely cooking with 11 touchdowns in four games, was completely silenced. Missouri’s defensive front was on another level, holding Baugh to a measly 13 rushing yards on 12 carries. As a squad, the Gators managed just 42 yards on the ground—zero runs of 20+ yards. It’s giving 'one-trick pony.' When the run game vanished, quarterback Aaron Philo had to force things, taking three sacks before getting benched for backup Tramell Jones in the fourth. With wide receiver Vernell Brown III still out, the passing game just couldn’t get the spark it needed.
Defense couldn't keep up
It wasn’t just the offense. Missouri’s Jamal Roberts ate, racking up 211 rushing yards and three scores. Austin Simmons also shredded the secondary for 340 passing yards. Missing safety Bryce Thornton definitely hurt, but the tackling effort across the board was highkey struggling.
Why it matters
This loss is a massive wake-up call. Sumrall warned his team that if they didn’t stay humble, they’d get humbled, and Missouri made sure that happened. With massive clashes against Texas and Georgia looming on the schedule, the Gators have to level up their depth and consistency. They are still in the SEC hunt, but they need to say less and show more if they want to stay in the College Football Playoff conversation.
