If you needed a reason to get outside today, the Tippbarlake Exmoor Pony Herd is currently giving main character energy. About 100 of these iconic ponies are being gathered at Brendon Barton Farm for their annual inspection—a local tradition that’s been happening for generations.
Kristina Auckland, who manages the herd with her family, explained that while these ponies live freely on Brendan Common all year, they need a yearly health check to make sure they’re thriving.
More than just cute faces
Beyond being iconic, these ponies are lowkey conservation heroes. Auckland noted that they are "really good at eating certain types of grasses" and play a huge role in managing local habitats. By gathering them, the team ensures the breed stays healthy and continues to support the land for years to come.
Why it matters
The gathering has become a bit of a viral hit, with crowds growing every year thanks to social media. If you're heading out to watch at Scobhill Gate, the team is collecting donations for the Devon Air Ambulance. Auckland says the service is "absolutely crucial" for rural communities, so even a small donation is a massive W. It’s a great way to support the local heritage and make sure the air ambulance can keep helping people across the region.
