It’s giving absolute chaos in Philadelphia after a city worker, Eric Lewis, 35, allegedly ambushed two police officers early Saturday morning in West Philadelphia. One officer, 40-year-old Shane Seiber, lost his life after being shot three times, leaving behind his wife and two young kids. His partner, a father of five, was hit 12 times and is currently in stable condition, though he’s still not out of the woods. After the initial shooting, Lewis reportedly took off down an alley and fired on nine other responding officers before being caught hiding in a tree. He’s now facing about 80 charges, including murder and 10 counts of attempted murder.
A history of dodging charges
Real talk: the plot thickens when you look at Lewis’s past. Despite facing serious violence charges before, he was somehow still working for the Philadelphia Water Department. District Attorney Larry Krasner revealed that a 2019 road-rage murder case against Lewis fell apart in 2023 because of a "deeply troubled investigation."
Krasner claims an officer involved in the case was secretly dating Lewis’s sister and even invented a fake suspect named "Spice" to sabotage the investigation. The judge, who reportedly has deep law enforcement roots, was so disturbed that he ordered an internal affairs probe into the officers—something he had never done before. Lewis also dodged assault charges back in 2021 after the main witness passed away.
The fallout
Now, everyone is asking why the city didn't vet him better. Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel said the focus is currently on supporting the victims' families, but confirmed they are looking into every aspect of this. Meanwhile, the Mayor’s office and the Water Department have been quiet. It's a massive L for the city’s safety protocols.
