The postgame heat
The vibes were absolutely off at Sunday’s San Francisco 49ers game against the Denver Broncos. After locking in a 24-14 win, 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw made a beeline for his former head coach, Sean Payton. Greenlaw didn't hold back, telling him to "get the f-ck off my field!" It wasn't a heat-of-the-moment slip, either; Greenlaw doubled down on the comment to reporters later, citing total disrespect from his time in Denver.
The breakdown
Greenlaw’s beef with Payton dates back to his 2025 season with the Broncos, where he signed a three-year, $35 million deal. The relationship soured quickly. Greenlaw claims that once he started struggling with injuries, Payton basically ghosted him, refusing to even look his way during team interactions starting in Week 12.
"He wouldn't even look at me because of my injury," Greenlaw said. The final straw? Being released from the team without a direct phone call from Payton. "The disrespect. He couldn't be man-to-man and call my phone and say, 'We're going to cut you,'" Greenlaw noted.
The stats don't lie
Greenlaw used all that frustration to fuel a massive performance. He led the 49ers with 12 tackles—his best game this season—proving he’s still elite. Meanwhile, Payton kept it classy in his response, saying, "I think the world of him. I love everything about him."
Why it matters
The 49ers are now sitting pretty at 4-0 and have a massive matchup against the defending champion Seattle Seahawks next week. Meanwhile, the 2-2 Broncos are looking to bounce back against the Chargers. It’s safe to say this feud is rent-free in Greenlaw’s head, and honestly, the man ate on the field this weekend.
