A wild pair in the Lone Star State
Dennis Rodman—the five-time NBA champ known for his ‘Bad Boy’ era with the Pistons and Bulls—just pulled up to Texas alongside President Trump. Sporting some sparkly black pants, Crocs, and a shirt featuring his own face, the basketball legend was spotted hanging out with White House staff in Denton, Texas. He wasn't solo, either; he was accompanied by his girlfriend, rapper Yella Yella.
The North Korea connection
Trump didn't miss a chance to give Rodman a major shout-out during a speech at a Peterbilt Motors facility. He praised the athlete’s rebounding skills, calling him the “best rebounder in the history of basketball.” But the real tea is the diplomatic side. Trump credited Rodman for his help during previous negotiations with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, noting that Rodman’s history of working with the North Korean basketball team gave him a unique "in."
Real talk: as Trump looks to potentially re-engage with Pyongyang, he’s been picking people's brains for ideas, and it sounds like Rodman is a key voice in his circle. Rodman has visited North Korea multiple times since 2013, famously calling Kim a "friend for life." However, the situation is a bit messy; despite the bromance, reports have surfaced of a 2014 trip where Rodman reportedly got super drunk and allegedly defecated on a hotel room floor.
Moving on to Oklahoma
Following the Denton event, the crew is heading to Durant, Oklahoma—the very place where Rodman played college ball back in the mid-80s. While Trump has signaled that the U.S. won't have problems with North Korea as long as he's in office, Pyongyang has been pretty cold on the idea of another summit, recently claiming that denuclearization talks are a total dead end. It’s giving complicated, and the plot thickens as the White House weighs its next move.
Why it matters
With Trump looking to refocus on foreign policy following the midterms, bringing a wildcard like Rodman into the fold suggests a highly unconventional approach to North Korean diplomacy that has everyone watching to see what happens next.
