Inside the Lazarus Group laundering machine
Real talk: the Lazarus Group is the ultimate bad actor, and on-chain investigator ZachXBT just pulled the curtain back on how they move their bags. In a deep-dive thread, ZachXBT revealed he went undercover back in February 2025, fronting $349,700 of his own capital to pose as a client for a Chinese-based laundering syndicate. By taking a 5% hit on trades, he gained the trust of an operator nicknamed "Jimmy Green."
The investigation highlights a network that has laundered over $1 billion for North Korean hackers. Thanks to his work, $12 million in funds linked to the Bybit hack were traced, and Tether eventually froze $442,000 in illicit USDT. Chainalysis data shows that hackers tied to the country have offloaded at least $6.75 billion since the start of 2025. It’s a wild reminder that while the blockchain is transparent, the off-chain world of human intermediaries is where the plot thickens.
CFTC takes charge
With the CLARITY Act dead in the Senate, D.C. regulators aren't sitting on their hands. CFTC Chair Michael Selig announced the agency is bypassing Congress to use its existing authority. They’ve proposed a new "crypto asset market" (CAM) category, aiming to bring uniform federal oversight to platforms that offer leverage or margin trading. Note that this doesn't touch your average spot exchange, which stays under state-level rules. It’s giving regulatory pivot.
Metaplanet’s yield hunt
Japanese firm Metaplanet is doubling down on its Bitcoin-first strategy. They’ve launched a net interest income plan to generate cash from strategic investments, with the goal of using that yield to stack more sats. While BTC will remain 85% to 90% of their treasury, the move aims to silence shareholder concerns regarding the company’s capital structure and governance.
Why it matters
The market is still in a "wait and see" mood regarding regulation, but the institutional playbooks are becoming clearer. Between ZachXBT’s findings proving how serious these laundering operations are and Metaplanet's aggressive treasury maneuvering, it's clear the industry is maturing—even if the regulatory path remains a mess. Always remember: none of this is financial advice, and staying vigilant on-chain is the ultimate W.
