The Costco expansion grind

Real talk: Costco is playing the long game and winning. The warehouse king is dropping a massive $7.5 billion in the 2027 fiscal year to fuel a major expansion, with plans to open 33 new locations total.

If you're in California, the vibes are looking good for your wallet. Costco is set to drop a brand-new, larger store in Vallejo this November, replacing the existing spot to fix those parking woes we all hate. It’s giving much-needed upgrade. The company also confirmed they’re opening a massive new location in Camarillo on October 30.

The competition heats up

It’s not just Costco making moves. Sam’s Club is lowkey trying to steal some thunder by expanding its own California footprint, recently opening a new spot in Lathrop.

Despite the hype, some locals are skeptical about the November timeline for the Vallejo store, with commenters online pointing out there’s still plenty of exterior and interior work to finish. But hey, when Costco says it’s coming, it’s usually coming.

Coming to a city near you

Outside of Cali, the expansion is national. In October alone, they’re hitting Lee’s Summit, Missouri; The Colony, Texas; Amherst, New York; and Lawrence, Kansas. November is even busier with nine more stores launching in spots like South Meridian, Idaho; Chandler, Arizona; Newport News, Virginia; and Franklin, Wisconsin.

Why it matters

Costco is betting big on physical retail while other brands are pulling back. For you, this means potentially more access to bulk savings and better facilities, but it also signals that the warehouse wars are officially hitting a fever pitch—which is a major W for consumers looking to save on groceries.
