The fiber-forward flex
If you thought your gut health journey started and ended with trendy prebiotic sodas, think again. While the U.S. is currently in its "fibermaxxing" era, Japan has been ahead of the curve since 2017 with a mysterious beverage called Coke Plus. It’s essentially a standard-tasting Diet Coke, but with a secret weapon: 5g of indigestible dextrin fiber.
Why it slaps
Unlike those other prebiotic drinks currently haunting the beverage aisles that are heavy on stevia or apple cider vinegar, Coke Plus tastes like the real deal. It’s lowkey the "fridge cigarette" of soft drinks—that familiar, chemical-filled comfort we all crave, but with a little extra digestive support. The brand claims the fiber helps suppress fat absorption and moderate blood fat levels, making it a hit for an older demographic in Japan. Still, travelers who’ve sampled it are obsessed, with some Reddit users even calling it "magical Diet Coke."
The struggle is real
Despite the massive success of U.S. brands like Olipop, which is currently valued at nearly $2bn, Coke Plus remains notoriously difficult to track down stateside. You’re currently stuck scouring eBay or begging your bestie to haul a crate back from their next Japan trip. But don’t lose hope just yet. Coca-Cola CEO James Quincey recently hinted to CNBC that we might see "fiber creep" into products this year. We love a potential expansion, bestie.
Why it matters
As we collectively pivot toward functional beverages, Coke Plus proves that you don't always need weird ingredients to get the health benefits. If the biggest soda company in the world officially brings this stateside, it could totally change the game for those of us who want our daily soda fix without sacrificing our gut health.
