Listen, if you’re currently in the middle of college app season, I lowkey feel for you. It’s giving high-stress vibes, and OpenAI knows it. They just announced a new "College Planner" tool coming to their ChatGPT for Teens mode, designed to keep all your application requirements, financial aid steps, and deadlines in one place.
How it actually works
According to OpenAI, this feature is for students in grades 10 through 12 planning for four-year colleges. The goal is to act as a centralized dashboard where you can track what you’ve finished and what still needs to be done. You can even ask the bot to explain what a specific requirement actually means or get help drafting stuff. It’s launching "soon" in the U.S.
They’re also dropping a few study-focused updates for everyone on iOS. You’ll be able to snap a bunch of photos in a row to merge into a single PDF, and ChatGPT will now auto-generate flashcards from your notes. Real talk: that’s a W for finals season.
The hype vs. the reality
Before you get too excited, this update comes at a spicy time. Common Sense Media recently roasted ChatGPT for Teens, calling it an "unacceptable risk" because it’s still way too easy to use as a homework machine and the parental notification features are lacking.
OpenAI is trying to clap back at that narrative by claiming teens only use the tool for an average of under 15 minutes a day. Whether or not this new planner actually helps you get into your dream school without the bot just doing the essay for you? That remains to be seen.
Why it matters
Applying for college is a massive headache of logistics and admin work. If this tool actually streamlines the process, it could be a major life hack. Just remember that AI is still a tool—not your guidance counselor—so don't let it do all the heavy lifting for you.
