Lady A’s Charles Kelley is getting real with fans about his health, revealing that he has been diagnosed with a rare blood cancer called multiple myeloma. The country star shared the update in a candid video alongside his wife, Cassie Kelley, on September 29.
How it started
It wasn't a routine check-up that tipped him off, but rather some concerning physical symptoms. Kelley explained that he suffered a few "random rib fractures" that prompted his doctors to run a series of blood tests. Those tests ultimately led to the diagnosis.
The outlook
Despite the heavy news, the 45-year-old is keeping his head held high. Kelley noted that he feels healthy and optimistic, especially given how far treatment options have advanced in just the last few years.
He’s also planning to keep his life as normal as possible. "In sobriety it’s all about one day at a time and never out of control so that’s the way we’re looking at it," Kelley said. He plans to continue working, including upcoming Christmas shows and the release of new music with his Lady A bandmates, Hillary Scott and David Haywood.
Kelley, who is dad to 10-year-old Ward and 12-month-old Archer, said he’s choosing to focus on the things he loves to keep his strength up. "It’s just another hurdle and we’re confident that we’re going to get through it," he added.
