California is lowkey dominating the academic scene. According to the 2027 Times Higher Education World University Rankings, three Golden State schools just smashed their way into the top 10 globally.
Stanford University tied for third place alongside Princeton, while Caltech secured the No. 7 spot. UC Berkeley also made the cut, tying with Yale for ninth. It’s giving main character energy for the West Coast, as these institutions stood out among 2,297 universities evaluated across 118 countries.
Beyond the top 10, the University of California system and private state colleges showed out with six UC campuses and three private schools hitting the global top 100. Other notable mentions include UCLA at No. 20, UC San Diego at No. 37, and UC Davis at No. 65. UC Santa Barbara, USC, and UC Irvine also claimed spots in the top 100.
How the rankings work
Times Higher Education didn't just throw darts at a board. They used 17 performance indicators across five categories: teaching, research environment, research quality, international outlook, and industry impact. Reputation, student-to-staff ratios, and patent activity were all major factors in the final results.
