It’s giving major bad vibes for the morning commute in the Bronx. On Friday morning, a 27-year-old rider on a northbound No. 2 train was caught in a random, terrifying situation when they were slashed in the face with a knife. The incident went down around 9:10 a.m. as the train passed through the 225th Street station in Williamsbridge.
Police say the two men didn't know each other at all, making the whole thing a complete mystery as to why it happened. The victim was rushed to Montefiore Medical Center and is thankfully in stable condition. As for the attacker? They’re currently on the run, last spotted wearing a black hoodie and navy sweatpants.
Real talk, the timing is super tense. This comes just after NYPD officials shared that transit crime is technically up 0.9 percent compared to this time last year. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch noted that while major subway crime is at its second-lowest level in 15 years, there’s been an 11 percent spike in felony assaults, often involving people with documented mental health histories or repeat offenders. It’s definitely a reminder to stay alert when you're riding the rails.
Why it matters
Safety on NYC subways is a huge concern, especially with transit assault numbers trending upward. This latest incident highlights ongoing challenges the city faces in managing subway security and the specific issue of felony assaults that have been rising throughout the year.
