The situation
Real talk: The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) just pulled a major move that is definitely not passing the vibe check. On Sunday night, the DHS dropped a highlight reel of Eagles legend and Hall of Fame safety Brian Dawkins on social media to respond to rumors about a migrant caravan. The post was captioned, "Our time has come," and it literally featured a clip of Dawkins saying those exact words before cutting to his iconic, bone-crushing hits.
The fallout
Brian Dawkins did not stay silent on this one. He hopped on social media to clear the air, stating, "Let's be clear: I didn't give permission for my name, image, and likeness to be used by anybody." He followed up by telling everyone to take a deep breath and stay blessed. The NFL, clearly not here for the unauthorized use of their footage, confirmed on Monday that they have officially asked the DHS to scrub the post from their feeds.
Even with the league and Dawkins pushing back, the video was still live as of 5 p.m. ET Monday. While the DHS claimed they are using "every Weapon at our disposal" to handle border security, they are currently playing defense against a massive PR L.
Why it matters
Beyond the political noise, this is a massive reminder that even a Hall of Famer's NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) is not up for grabs by just anyone. Dawkins—a nine-time Pro Bowler and Eagles icon—was a force of nature who led Philly to four straight NFC title games. Using a legend’s image without consent is a total reach, and the NFL is making sure it doesn't become a trend.
