The dip reality check
'Uptober' is lowkey failing to deliver the gains everyone was manifesting. After Bitcoin slipped under $81,000 and Ethereum drifted toward the $2,400 mark on Thursday, the entire top ten leaderboard went into the red for the week. The vibes have been pretty off, and for the degen plays, it’s been even rougher: Zcash, NEAR, Pump.fun, and Venice Token all saw double-digit percentage drops in a single day.
Why the chart looks like this
It wasn't just one thing, but a confluence of factors that caused this liquidations-heavy moment. First, Spot Bitcoin ETFs saw a massive $484.9 million in outflows on Wednesday—the worst day since spring—followed by another $244 million on Thursday. This flips the October net flow to negative. Meanwhile, Ethereum funds have been bleeding for eight straight sessions, totaling $640 million.
Adding to the pressure, Tom Lee noted that Bitmine is expected to pause ETH accumulation once it hits 5% of the total supply. That removes a major buyer that has been showing up weekly since June 2025. On top of that, Ethereum funding rates flipped negative, and global oil prices spiked following attacks on Iranian tankers, which highkey spooked risk-on investors.
Is the bull case dead?
Real talk: no. Crypto majors have already started clawing their way back, with BTC reclaiming $82k and ETH pushing toward $2,500. The broader macro thesis—tokenization, institutional adoption, and agentic crypto—is still fully intact. This looks more like a healthy flush of late leverage rather than the start of a massive collapse. As we approach the anniversary of the 10/10 crash from last year, the market is hoping for a "Reverse 10/10" to keep the bull run alive. As always, none of this is financial advice; stay safe out there while navigating the volatility.
Why it matters
Markets often experience "thin" periods where prices rise without fresh capital inflow, which makes them vulnerable to fast corrections. This pullback serves as a reminder that even in a bull market, leverage can be a dangerous game.
