The 'No-Video' Security Cam
Real talk: we’ve all been lowkey paranoid about smart home cameras spying on our private lives. Well, Apple might have a solution that’s literally designed to stop the creeping. According to Mark Gurman on the Power On podcast, Apple is working on a new smart home ecosystem that includes a security camera—codenamed J450—that doesn't record video at all.
Yes, you read that right. Instead of a feed that captures your entire living room drama, this device functions more like a high-tech sensor. It uses on-device AI to analyze your surroundings and tell you what’s happening, but the end result is just text. If someone walks into a room, you might get a notification saying "person detected" rather than a clip. It’s giving "privacy-first," but also leaving some of us scratching our heads about the utility.
Under the Hood
So, how does it know who’s there? Gurman says the device will feature facial recognition to identify people entering a room, but "you’re not getting anything but text descriptions." The tech is apparently similar to what we’ve heard about potential camera-equipped AirPods. It likely uses image sensors with embedded AI to process everything locally on the device, meaning no footage ever needs to be stored or uploaded to the cloud.
Design-wise, imagine a metal cylinder that looks like a giant chapstick. It’s part of a wider push for a new smart home hub (codenamed J490) expected to launch as early as next month. If you already use Apple Home, you might recognize this as an evolution of the existing "Detect Activity" setting, which already lets you track motion without the full video stream.
Why it matters
Is a security camera that doesn't record video actually useful, or is it just another expensive gadget? While it definitely solves the "Big Brother" privacy concern that keeps cameras out of many bedrooms and living rooms, it remains to be seen if people will pay Apple prices for a text-based alert system. If you just want to know that someone is home without the footage of you lounging in pajamas, this might be a major W. If you actually need to see what's happening, well—the vibes are off.
