The Bronx Bombers are charging into the ALDS against the Tampa Bay Rays, but they’re still missing their main character. The Yankees confirmed Saturday morning that three-time AL MVP Aaron Judge will not be on the roster for the division series.

Manager Aaron Boone is playing the long game, keeping the 34-year-old sidelined as he recovers from a calf strain that has kept him out since mid-September. Boone told reporters that rushing him back just wasn't the move. "Ultimately, I obviously decided keeping him off was the best thing," he said.

The Recovery Plan

Judge has only recently started running and taking batting practice again. The team wants to ensure he’s fully gassed and ready for high-stakes baseball rather than risking a setback. Because of postseason roster rules, if the team added him and then had to pull him due to injury, he’d be ineligible for the ALCS, too. So, the Yanks are choosing to prioritize his health now to ensure they have the real Aaron Judge later.

There’s also the roster math: keeping Judge off allows the team to keep Luis García Jr. in the lineup, who has been a massive W since joining the team.

A Tough Season

It’s been a frustrating year for the star. After dealing with rib and shoulder issues earlier in 2026, he only managed seven games post-return before the calf injury hit. In his 66 total games this season, Judge slashed .241/.360/.511 with 18 home runs, but the team is clearly hoping to unlock that ceiling during a deeper October run.

Why it matters

The Rays finished the season with the best record in the AL, so the Yankees are going to need every bit of momentum they can get. While the team swept the Red Sox without him, the stakes are officially higher now. The vibes are high, but the pressure is definitely on.
