More eyes on the books

Real talk: if you’re operating in the Hong Kong crypto space, the compliance vibes are shifting. The Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) and the Accounting and Financial Reporting Council (AFRC) just linked up, signing a new memorandum of understanding (MoU) to tighten the screws on financial reporting and audits.

This isn't just a minor update—it's a serious expansion. The new agreement makes sure that licensed virtual asset service providers, along with other licensed corps and funds, are held to a higher standard of transparency.

What's actually changing?

The MoU creates a formal framework for the regulators to share information, refer cases, and even tag-team on inspections and investigations. Basically, they're making sure the audit and assurance work is airtight. SFC Chair Kelvin Wong noted that this move is all about getting "more comprehensive oversight" across the board.

This agreement officially replaces an older 2021 pact between the SFC and the Financial Reporting Council, which rebranded to the AFRC back in 2022. It’s lowkey just the latest step in Hong Kong’s ongoing quest to build out a robust regulatory framework for digital assets, which has already included new rules for crypto advisory services and frameworks for margin financing.

Why it matters

For the degen crowd, it might feel like the authorities are always tightening the net, but this is standard procedure for institutional maturation. While it’s not financial advice, remember that clear regulatory guardrails are usually the first step toward long-term market stability. It’s giving maturity, and honestly, the industry needs it to stop the plot from spiraling. Stay risk-aware and always do your own research before moving your bags.
