The Drop
Anthropic just dropped Claude Sonnet 5.5, an upgrade to their June release, and real talk: the specs are looking pretty W for anyone building on-chain or doing heavy dev work. Anthropic says this mid-tier model is over 30% faster than the previous version.
It’s built for the everyday grind—fixing bugs, drafting docs, and spreadsheet wizardry. But the real flex? Its coding ability. On the Terminal-Bench 4.0 test, Sonnet 5.5 hit a 70.6% success rate, actually outpacing the higher-end Opus 5.5 at 66.4% and leaving the original Sonnet 5 in the dust at 10.3%.
The Price Reality
Before you go all-in, let's keep it 100 on the financials. Anthropic is pricing this at $2 per million input tokens and $10 for output. That’s half the price of the Opus 5.5. However, because this model is a "heavy talker"—it can write up to 60% more tokens than Opus at max settings—your actual bill can spike if you keep the settings on high.
Independent testers at Artificial Analysis found that while Sonnet 5.5 is a beast, you only see those major savings if you keep the "effort" dial low. On default settings, it’s a massive upgrade for a fraction of the cost, but pushing it to max capacity makes it pricier to run.
Why it matters
The AI arms race is getting spicy. With OpenAI recently slashing prices on its models, Anthropic is clearly trying to win the value game. If you're a dev, you’re basically getting flagship coding power for a discount, as long as you're smart about how you configure your calls. Just remember: this is tech utility, not financial advice, and even Anthropic admits Opus 5.5 still holds the crown for complex tasks requiring long-term judgment.
